Description
Finely carved in relief from a single plank of oak, each panel with flowing acanthus scrolls and floral rosettes arranged symmetrically in rhythmic spirals, terminating in foliate tendrils. The carving is of crisp and lively quality, the surface retaining its mellow patination and traces of early wax polish.
These panels epitomise the Northern Mannerist style of ornament current in the Low Countries around 1580–1620, which blended classical Renaissance motifs with a lively, naturalistic treatment of foliage. The scrolling acanthus and sunflower medallions recall the engravings of Hans Vredeman de Vries and Cornelis Floris, widely disseminated through print and influential on cabinetmakers and carvers across Flanders, Antwerp, and later Amsterdam.
