Description

Each of cast brass (copper alloy with high zinc content), of bold architectural form, the knopped baluster stems rising from tripod bases with lion-mask and scroll ornament, set on paw feet, and supporting wide dished drip-pans with tall tapering prickets. The upper baluster with acanthus knops and turned mouldings, the whole with a rich, dry patina from centuries of liturgical use.

The strong modelling of the lion masks and the muscular scroll feet link these closely to North Italian workshops active in Veneto and Lombardy at the end of the 16th century, whose output combines late-Renaissance Mannerist ornament with the early Baroque taste for dramatic sculptural bases. Comparable examples survive in ecclesiastical collections at Vicenza, Florence and Bologna, as well as the Museo Nazionale del Bargello.
