Description

Tin-glazed earthenware, the lobed rim painted in yellow, green, and blue with alternating stylised flowerheads and leaves, the centre decorated with a peacock standing amidst flowering plants and a large chrysanthemum bloom, a small insect hovering above. The whole within a narrow yellow line border, the glaze with fine crackling typical of Delft production.

The peacock motif—a symbol of beauty, immortality, and the Resurrection—was among the most popular decorative subjects in Delftware of the late 17th century, inspired by Chinese Kraak porcelain bird-and-flower designs of the 1620s–40s. By the 1680s, Delft painters adapted these motifs into more colourful compositions, often framed within lobed or barbed rims. The soft tin glaze, bright manganese-free yellow, and translucent cobalt blue are typical of Delft workshops active around De Grieksche A or De Porceleyne Fles.
