Description

Each salt of elongated octagonal form with chamfered angles and a narrow footring; the sides painted in rich cobalt with alternating baroque cartouches and flowerhead panels between scrollwork, the borders edged with a characteristic hatched band. The cover repeats the hatched border and is painted with a small chinoiserie riverscape within a square reserve. Tin-glazed throughout; bases unglazed at the foot showing the buff body.Painter’s monogram: HVH (to the base), traditionally attributed to Hendrick van Hoorn (active late 17th–early 18th century)

The boldly graphic side panels and the tight “basket-hatched” border belong to a well-defined Delft decorative repertoire of the decades around 1700. The painted monogram HVH—recorded on Delftware of this period—is commonly linked to the painter Hendrick van Hoorn, associated in the literature with leading factories such as De Grieksche A (The Greek A) and De Metaale Pot (The Metal Pot). Salts of this architectural, faceted type were set on the table in pairs or larger services during the later seventeenth century.
