Description

Of austere and well-balanced architectural design, the back formed with a single large fielded panel between moulded stiles, the arms sharply shaped and supported on robust baluster-turned front posts continuing to the legs, joined by plain rectangular stretchers. The seat board, rails, and mouldings retain their original crisp profiles, the whole with an excellent dry patinated surface of deep nut-brown colour, showing centuries of careful use. Patch repair to one side rail, otherwise in sound and original condition.
Condition: Minor patch repair to upright rail; fine colour and surface.

This armchair exemplifies the restrained aesthetic of early Stuart joinery, characteristic of the period between Jacobean exuberance and the later Commonwealth austerity. Its structural integrity and elegant simplicity recall the finest West Country examples.
