Description
A richly carved Renaissance oak panel, the central oval cartouche framed by voluted strapwork and flanked by scrolling acanthus and fruiting vine, each end terminating in lion masks and rosettes. The field carved in crisp, high relief with a delicate balance of naturalistic foliage and Mannerist symmetry, enclosed within a fine egg-and-dart moulded border.
This is a work of exceptional craftsmanship, reflecting the refined design vocabulary circulating in mid-16th-century France, influenced by engravings after Jacques Androuet du Cerceau and Hugues Sambin. The disciplined symmetry of the design—combining classical ornament with naturalistic flora—suggests origin in a Lyonnais or Burgundian workshop, possibly once forming part of a larger architectural boiserie or a piece of court furniture.
