Description

A finely potted English delftware bowl, painted in vibrant cobalt blue with a continuous floral design of peony, tulip, and pomegranate sprays around the exterior, the interior with a central hatched diaper motif surrounded by scattered stylised blossoms and ovals, all within a double line border. The bowl stands on a narrow ring foot, the glaze showing attractive pooling and fine crackle typical of Restoration period English tin-glazed earthenware.

This rare surviving example belongs to the mid-17th-century group of English blue and white delftwares, influenced by imported Chinese Transitional porcelain yet freely reinterpreted by local painters. The interior lattice design recalls pieces excavated from the Southwark and Lambeth kilns, while the soft floral motifs relate to contemporary production at Bristol. Bowls of this type were everyday tablewares of the urban merchant classes, prized for their vivid colour and exotic appearance.
