Description
A German stoneware jug, of elegant bulbous form tapering to a short neck with a plain cylindrical rim and a strap handle, the whole with a pale grey-white ash glaze and characteristic horizontal throwing rings. The gently spreading flanged foot—formed by the potter’s hand at the wheel—identifies this as part of the Siegburg tradition of stoneware manufacture active along the Rhine in the later 15th century.
The vessel’s restrained shape and pale colour typify early Siegburg wares made for both domestic and ecclesiastical use before the more elaborate bearded-jug types of the 16th century. Such pieces were valued for their purity of material and the high firing temperatures that made them almost impervious to liquid—an innovation in European pottery of the late medieval period.
