Description

A rare English delftware plate of plain white tin-glazed earthenware, the shallow circular form with a wide everted rim and narrow footrim, covered overall in a softly lustrous opaque white glaze with subtle pooling and faint firing tones. The unadorned surface exemplifies the refined simplicity of early English delftware production, when tin-glazing was itself considered a luxury finish derived from Italian maiolica and Dutch faience.

Plates of this restrained type are uncommon survivals, as most were later painted or discarded in favour of blue and white decoration. This example, with its clean glaze and fine wheel-thrown form, may have been intended for domestic display or apothecary use, and would have been admired for its resemblance to costly imported porcelain.
