Description
A large and finely carved oak relief panel, arched at the top, depicting the Annunciation. At the centre, the Virgin Mary kneels before a lectern as the Archangel Gabriel announces the conception of Christ. Above, God the Father appears with orb and benediction, sending forth the Holy Spirit in radiant beams towards Mary, while choirs of angels with scrolls, instruments, and trumpets surround him.
The lower register includes figures of prophets and Old Testament kings bearing scrolls and books, prefiguring the moment of Incarnation. This iconographic program transforms the Annunciation into a cosmic vision of salvation history, linking Mary’s obedience to the fulfilment of prophecy and divine will.
Carved in Flanders, likely Antwerp, during the mid to late 16th century, such panels would have served as altarpiece wings or private devotional works, offering a rich focus for meditation on the mystery of the Incarnation. Its large scale, densely populated composition, and deep undercutting mark it as a work of exceptional quality within the Flemish Renaissance tradition.
