Description
A set of four carved oak panels, each centred with a winged angel’s head and shoulders contained within a circular cartouche, framed by an architectural strap work scheme.
The angels are shown head-on, with their wings folded closely behind the shoulders, not outstretched, and are carved only to the upper torso, emerging from a shaped roundel. Each has subtly different facial treatment, yet all conform to the same workshop pattern, suggesting serial production within a single commission.
The surrounding design consists of a rectilinear cartouche of Mannerist strapwork, formed of corner scrolls, moulded bars, and cusped quadrant blocks, enriched with punched background texture and small pyramidal bosses. Vertical side elements, derived from pilaster ornament, flank each cartouche, and the lower border terminates in opposed foliate scrolls typical of late Elizabethan panel composition.
