Description

Tin-glazed earthenware, each plate painted in blue with a pastoral scene depicting a standing figure and child by a stream, with a seated shepherd and distant church tower, all within a landscape of trees and rolling hills. The rim decorated with broad brushstrokes suggesting foliage, the reverse covered in a pale bluish-white glaze with fine pitting typical of Bristol wares.

The loose, painterly composition and cool blue tonality are characteristic of late 17th-century Bristol delftware, whose decorators often drew inspiration from contemporary Dutch landscape prints. The figure groups and wooded settings belong to a group of landscape plates attributed to the Temple Back or Brislington potteries.
