Description
A large leaded bronze cauldron attributed to the Sturton foundry, South Petherton, Somerset. Cast with upright angular handles, bulbous body, and three splayed feet, the vessel bears the characteristic seam lines and proportions typical of Sturton production in the mid-17th century. These cauldrons were essential household vessels used for brewing, stewing, and communal cooking, but also served symbolically as “status pots,” reflecting the wealth of households able to afford such durable cast bronze ware.
The Sturton family were among the most prolific provincial founders of the period, their products distributed widely across the West Country and beyond, as documented by Roderick Butler in English Bronze Cooking Vessels and Their Founders.
