Description
A superb Netherlandish oak relief panel, carved in high relief with a dynamic representation of the Annunciation. The Virgin is shown seated at her prie-dieu, interrupted in devotion by the Archangel Gabriel who enters dramatically from the right, his drapery billowing in deeply undercut folds. Above, the Holy Spirit descends in the form of a radiant sunburst. The composition is framed within a scrolling border enriched with masks, foliage, and strapwork.
Beneath the scene, a cartouche is inscribed “DE BODES SCHOPMAR LVJ”, almost certainly identifying the patron or original owner, linking this panel directly to its 16th-century devotional context. Such signed or inscribed Netherlandish reliefs are comparatively rare, suggesting this example was a commissioned work intended for a domestic or small chapel setting.
The handling of the figures, the animated folds of drapery, and the strong chiaroscuro created by the deep carving all demonstrate the high quality of this workshop. The panel reflects the Mannerist influence then dominant in the Low Countries, merging devotional clarity with theatrical, sculptural energy.
