Description

A bulbous tin-glazed earthenware ewer with tall cylindrical neck, strap handle and short spout, painted in cobalt blue on a white glaze with broad stylised foliate scrolls and wave motifs around the body and neck. The underside shows a roughly trimmed, unglazed footrim typical of early northern European production. The glaze is slightly opaque and pitted, consistent with kiln firing in Dutch and German workshops rather than the cleaner, glassier surface of Italian tin-glaze.

The form derives from Italian maiolica “albarelli” and pouring ewers of the late sixteenth century, introduced to Northern Europe through trade and widely imitated by early Delft and Hanau workshops. The free-flowing floral scrolls and painterly brushwork closely resemble early Delft and Westerwald transitional wares—particularly pieces made before Delft achieved full refinement circa 1650.
