Description

A fine 17th-century French tapestry fragment, woven in wool and silk, depicting a cloaked prophet or hermit addressing a richly dressed woman who carries a child, with attendants kneeling in reverence at the lower edge. The composition suggests a biblical or allegorical narrative, possibly drawn from Old Testament or devotional themes, in which the central figure delivers guidance or prophecy. The figures are rendered with expressive drapery and naturalistic modelling, typical of French workshop productions of the period.
The field is enclosed within a floral border of scrolling roses, tulips, and carnations, emblematic of abundance and renewal. The border remains intact, though the main scene is now fragmentary, having once formed part of a larger tapestry cycle.
Condition: Woven in wool and silk, with areas of wear and fading consistent with age.

“The cloaked figure appears to be a prophet or sage, instructing a woman carrying a child, possibly drawn from Old Testament or allegorical sources. The fragment likely formed part of a larger tapestry cycle depicting moral or biblical narratives.”
