Description
A finely proportioned cast bronze cooking vessel or grape, probably Netherlandish and dating to the 16th century. The vessel has a rounded, globular body raised on three integral splayed feet, with a broad everted rim and a pair of distinctive angular handles extending from the shoulder to the lip.
Of particular interest is the small cross-shaped mark to the inner rim, apparently deliberately formed and possibly representing a founder’s, workshop or ownership mark. Comparable bronze tripod vessels were produced throughout the Low Countries during the late medieval and Renaissance periods, with related examples preserved in Dutch museum collections.
The underside retains evidence of the casting process, while the surface displays an attractive, naturally developed dark brown patina and extensive evidence of historic use.
