Description

A fine mid-17th-century boarded oak box, the front richly carved with interlaced guilloche ornament enclosing stylised rosettes, centred by its original iron lock plate and hasp. The design reflects a long-standing Renaissance motif symbolising continuity and protection, widely employed on English domestic furniture during the reign of Charles I. Its survival in excellent condition, with deep carving and rich colour, distinguishes this example as above the ordinary run of table boxes described by Chinnery.

Boxes of this type served both functional and symbolic roles in the household, safeguarding valuables, documents, or devotional items. The guilloche motif, circulating in English carving since the late 16th century, here takes on an especially bold and rhythmic form, suggesting a regional workshop with strong Renaissance influence.
