Description
An oak box of boarded construction, the front boldly carved with paired leafy volutes flanking a central fleur-de-lys, beneath an iron lockplate. The upper field bears the date 1689, divided by the initials L H, neatly incised in outline. The sides are plain with chip-carved edges, and the lid is formed from a single board, secured by original iron strap hinges.
The decorative vocabulary, particularly the scrolling leaf motifs and symmetrical arrangement around a central device, corresponds closely with late-17th-century workshop traditions of Devon. The fleur-de-lys, frequently encountered in West Country carving, may be read both as a conventionalised floral ornament and as a symbol of purity and faith, carrying medieval and Renaissance associations into vernacular furniture of the period.
