Description
A late Gothic domed oak casket, bound with original wrought iron straps and fitted with a carrying handle, now lacking its lock. The exterior is painted green, a later but historic surface that attests to the casket’s long use and preservation over centuries.
Of unusually small scale, this portable chest was intended for personal valuables, documents, or devotional items, and its heavy iron binding provided both practical security and symbolic assurance of protection. The domed form is characteristic of late 15th-century German workshops, where such caskets were produced for both domestic and travel use.
Although the lock has been lost, the survival of the iron strapwork and the mellowed painted surface lend the piece exceptional presence. Its compact scale and continued adaptation across generations speak to the enduring importance of such objects in daily and devotional life.
