Description
A finely carved oak relief panel with arched top, depicting the Mocking of Christ. Seated at centre, Christ is crowned with thorns and draped in a robe, while Roman soldiers taunt him with a reed sceptre and blows to the head. The architectural backdrop of brickwork arches and draped canopy enhances the theatricality of the scene.
This episode from the Passion narrative, in which Christ is derided as “King of the Jews,” was central to late medieval and Renaissance devotion. Believers were encouraged to meditate upon Christ’s humiliation and endurance, recognising in the reed sceptre and crown of thorns a profound paradox — symbols of mockery that simultaneously affirm his true kingship.
