Description
A large Spanish tin-glazed earthenware dish painted in blue, yellow, green and manganese with a Crucifixion scene, the figure of Christ shown nailed to a tall cross flanked by stylised trees, with a radiating yellow nimbus and schematic cloud forms above. Concentric blue and yellow border rings frame the composition. The naive yet forceful drawing style, restricted palette and freely brushed foliage are characteristic of the late seventeenth- to early eighteenth-century workshops of Talavera de la Reina and Puente del Arzobispo in Castile.
Condition:
An old diagonal crack, long ago secured on the reverse by traditional metal staples, with the related hairline visible to the front. Minor glaze losses, firing imperfections and surface wear consistent with age. No modern restoration.
